Book Review: UnBreaking by L.D. Waters

Book Review: UnBreaking by L.D. Waters

Art, angst, spice, and a fantasy plot that does not let up.

I picked up UnBreaking not knowing what to expect, and wow, I was not ready. This book is intense in all the best ways. L.D. Waters blends art, romance, and high-stakes fantasy into a ride that’s somehow both visually beautiful and emotionally brutal.

The Art Is Not Just Bonus Content

Let’s start with the illustrations. Waters is a visual artist, and it shows. The character art scattered throughout the book genuinely adds depth to the story. It made me feel more connected to the world and made key moments hit even harder. The book feels like part graphic novel, part fever dream and I mean that as a compliment.

Yes, It’s Spicy

This is one of those books that doesn’t tiptoe around tension or attraction. The spice is there, but it’s also meaningful. The emotional stakes are high, the characters are messy (in the best way), and when things do heat up... it’s earned. Not fluff, not filler, just the kind of slow-burn payoff I live for.

Emotionally Complex Characters

Everyone in this book is carrying something: trauma, secrets, revenge, longing. The characters are deeply flawed but layered in a way that made me root for them even when I didn’t agree with their choices. It’s that “I want to shake you and hug you” dynamic that makes for such a satisfying read.

Plot Twists Galore

The pacing is intense. Just when I thought we were heading toward resolution, a twist would knock everything sideways and I loved it. Nothing felt safe or predictable, but it also never felt chaotic just for the sake of it. Waters clearly knows where the story is going, and the ride is wild.

For Fans of ACOTAR

If you're into fantasy romance with dark edges, strong heroines, and morally complicated love interests, this has major ACOTAR vibes (but with its own flavor). It’s definitely one to recommend to your romantasy-loving friends.

Final Thoughts:
UnBreaking is immersive, dramatic, and beautiful - both in its storytelling and its presentation. It’s the kind of book that makes you feel a little unhinged while reading it (in the best way). If you're into fantasy romance with a dark twist, original art, and high emotional stakes, you’ll want this on your shelf.
